DESCRIPTION:Sing the Bay Fantastic!\nCelebrating Chesapeake Traditions in Song\nBaltimore Museum of Industry\nApril 23\, 2026 | 6 to 8 PM\n\nBuy Your Tickets Today!\n \nPrivateer Society & Donor Admission | $20\nGeneral Admission | $25\nDoor Admission | $35 \nThe folk duo Meneely & van Sante bring a breath of salt air to any stage.\n \nFrom heroic rescues to titillating tales of maritime miscreants\, the music of Janie Meneely and Rob van Sante celebrates the history\, characters and traditions of the Chesapeake Bay waterfront. \nSinger/songwriter/sailmaker/sailor Janie Meneely grew up in Annapolis and raised a family on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Masquerading as a recreational boating writer (Chesapeake Bay Magazine) she traveled the Bay collecting stories and crafting songs to reflect the lives of people who make a living “working” the water. Sometime in the last century\, she partnered with Eastern Shore songstress Chris Noyes and Annapolis poet laureate Jeff Holland to create a folk band called Crab Alley\, showcasing original music about the Bay and beyond. \nLife always changes things\, and Crab Alley parted ways eons ago. Nowadays Janie works as a duo with her life partner Dutch-born Rob van Sante who lends his knack for melodies and flair for vocal harmony to Janie’s compositions. Their music rambles from the raucous ruminations of a ne’er-do-well charter captain in “Nasty Nell” to more thoughtful ballads like the somber “Claud W. Somers\, 1977” about the tragic loss of a Chesapeake Bay skipjack. Her song about the Pride of Baltimore was written months before the ship sank and rewritten prior to the launch of Pride II. \n \nPhoto courtesy of Scott Wicking \nJanie hopes her work helps to kindle an appreciation of the Bay and its traditions. “I use my art to preserve the resource\,” Meneely says\, “the same way a painter might capture a lighthouse on canvas.” To this end\, along with several CDs\, she has compiled her Chesapeake Bay material in a songbook Sing the Bay Fantastic! \nJanie and Rob are delighted to share a few hours of music\, merriment and (sometimes) mayhem —be ready to sing along.

This weekend\, Pride of Baltimore II officially kicks off her Sail250 season in Baltimore with the release of Case 1 Rum\, a limited-edition collaboration with Old Line Spirits celebrating the beginning of a remarkable year for both the ship and our nation. \nAs America approaches its 250th anniversary\, Pride of Baltimore II will spend the summer sailing alongside some of the world’s most iconic tall ships at official Sail250 events from Virginia to New York and Boston. As Maryland’s ambassador under sail\, Pride will carry the story of the Chesapeake Bay and Baltimore’s maritime heritage to hundreds of thousands of visitors gathering to commemorate America’s semiquincentennial. \nBut this voyage is about more than the destinations. Through America’s Star-Spangled Ambassador: Legacy in Motion\, a remarkable team of filmmakers\, historians\, journalists\, educators\, authors\, students\, and emerging media professionals will join portions of the voyage to document the experience and share it with audiences across the country. \nThe journey south to Virginia will feature documentary filmmaker Justin Black\, maritime historian Andrew J. Lyter\, and Towson University graduate Zoe H.\, capturing life aboard Pride and exploring the waterways and stories that helped shape America. The return voyage from Norfolk to Baltimore will include WYPR producer Mark Gunnery and apprentices from the Alexandria Seaport Foundation\, highlighting both storytelling and maritime workforce development. \nAs Pride sails north to New York\, acclaimed author and screenwriter Rafael Alvarez and public historian Kate Livie will bring their unique perspectives to the voyage\, while aerial imagery will help capture the ship’s journey from a new vantage point.
