50 Years of Pride Part 16: Dedicated to the People

Dear friends and fans,

As part of our ongoing 50 Years of Pride series, we’ve been revisiting the remarkable early years of Pride of Baltimore, tracing her launch, her growing reputation, and the many ways she quickly captured the imagination of people at home and abroad. This week, we pause to celebrate all of the people who helped shape Pride of Baltimore.

This is a full accounting of the crew, staff, board members, and shipwrights who played a role in her life. We also recognize the designer, builder, and sailmaker who brought her into being. Each name reflects a contribution, whether at sea, in the yard, or behind the scenes. Together, they built something lasting. That legacy continues today aboard Pride of Baltimore II, and in the work we carry forward.

We take a moment here to recognize and celebrate them.

We also take this moment to look ahead.

On May 14 Maryland’s iconic tall ship and official sailing ambassador, Pride of Baltimore II, will be ceremonially rededicated as we begin our commemoration of America’s 250th Anniversary.

You are invited to join us for this waterfront gathering marking several milestones: the 40th anniversary of the loss of the original Pride of Baltimore, the 50th anniversary of the vision that launched Pride, and the rededication of Pride of Baltimore II as she continues her mission representing Maryland at home and around the world.

Governor Harry Hughes

Baltimore City

Mayor William Donald Schaefer

As we honor all who have shaped Pride of Baltimore, we invite you to look ahead with us. Whether by joining us on May 14, sailing with us this season, or helping to share Pride’s story, you help carry this living legacy forward.

Approaching the 40th anniversary of the loss of the original Pride of Baltimore, we are grateful to the donors who have helped raise more than $20,000 toward the restoration of the Pride Memorial. With less than $10,000 remaining to reach our $30,000 goal, we are within sight of completing this important effort.

The restored Memorial is expected to return to Rash Field this summer, where it will once again stand as a visible and lasting tribute along Baltimore’s waterfront.

We invite you to consider making a gift in honor or in memory of those who built and sailed her, and those we lost, supporting the restoration of the Pride Memorial and helping to ensure their legacy endures. We are deeply grateful to all who have already supported this work in honor and in memory, and to the many loyal supporters who sustain Pride’s mission throughout the year.
