Maryland Students to Participate in “Port of Opportunity” Contest

Pride of Baltimore and Port of Baltimore present second annual Maritime Day Contest

BALTIMORE, MD (December 16, 2014) – In anticipation of Baltimore’s 2nd annual National Maritime Day event, Pride of Baltimore, Inc. and the Port of Baltimore have launched their second annual statewide student contest! Maryland K – 12th grade students are challenged to use their creativity to explain (A) How the Port of Baltimore has changed over time, and why it is a major port city today; or (B) The evolution of Cargo Ships: How and why the design has evolved since the days of Baltimore Clippers. Students have freedom to tell the story through whatever creative means they choose –watercolor paintings, photography, poems, essays, videos, interpretive dances, dioramas, sculptures, etc.

This year’s topic was inspired by the Baltimore Port Alliance’s “Port of Opportunity” video. It is recommended that students view the video prior to starting their projects. To obtain a copy of the DVD, please contact: Joseph Wyatt with the Association of Maryland Pilots at: 410-684-2101 or jwyatt@mdpilots.com. Winners will be recognized on Sunday, May 17th, 2015 during the National Maritime Day commemoration and wreath laying ceremony. The top projects will also be featured on the Pride of Baltimore website through December 2015.

Projects (or images of projects) can be submitted through the Pride of Baltimore website:
https://www.pride2.org/portofopportunity/ or via mail to:

Pride of Baltimore, Inc.
Star-Spangled Student Contest
2700 Lighthouse Point East, Suite 330
Baltimore, MD 21224

The project submission deadline is 4:00 PM on Friday, May 1, 2015. Winners will be selected by a committee, and announced before Friday, May 8th. All K – 12th grade students residing in Maryland are welcome to apply.

The Pride of Baltimore II is a reconstruction of an early 19th century Baltimore-built topsails schooner. These fast and maneuverable vessels became famous as privateers during the War of 1812. Pride of Baltimore, Inc.’s mission is to promote historical maritime education, foster economic development and tourism, and represent the people of Maryland in ports throughout the world. Since her commissioning in October of 1988, Pride has traveled over 250,000 nautical miles, visited 40 countries, and docked in over 200 ports of call. For more information on programs and activities, please visit www.pride2.org.

National Maritime Day (Sunday, May 17, 2015) is a free event showcasing the companies and careers that make the Port of Baltimore the economic heart of Maryland. There will be several visiting ships and local working boats, educational organizations offering specialized training, and maritime heritage activities. National Maritime Day Commemoration ceremonies onboard the NS Savannah begin at 11:00 AM. Local food trucks will be available. The event is free and open to the public as part of the National Maritime Day Commemoration.
